LIU KIM

Liu Kim (b. 1995, Seoul, South Korea) graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Ceramic Arts and Art History from Ewha Womans University in Seoul. She also received a Master’s degree in Fine Art from the same institution. In 2023-24, she was awarded as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor's International Scholar in the Ceramics & Glass MA program at the Royal College of Art in London, UK.
Liu Kim adopts elements commonly regarded as flaws in ceramics—such as tearing, cracking, and distortion—as central sculptural language. Her ceramic works go beyond mere industrial functionality, aiming to embody the materiality and essential qualities inherent in clay. Her practice begins with the forms of traditional Korean jars such as moon jars and prunus vase which she reinterprets with a contemporary sensibility. Rather than pursuing perfect or smooth shapes, she questions conventional perceptions of ceramics and standards of beauty through twisted structures and uneven surfaces.
Her ceramics transcend their common industrial uses and aspire to embody the intrinsic qualities of clay. Therefore, through her use of clay, Liu Kim aims to transform perceptions, encouraging audiences to view the world through new perspectives and seek interpretations.
