LIU KIM

Liu Kim (b. 1995, Seoul, South Korea) graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Ceramic Arts and Art History from Ewha Womans University in Seoul. She also received a Master’s degree in Fine Art from the same institution. In 2023-24, she was awarded as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor's International Scholar in the Ceramics & Glass MA program at the Royal College of Art in London, UK.
She questions social norms through the physical properties of clay, such as tearing and cracking, which are typically seen as defects. She is drawn to ceramics due to the similarity between the changing properties of clay with temperature and our appearance, which varies with the surrounding environment. She believes that seeking new meanings beyond the existing ones is a fundamental essence of art, and considers clay to be the most appropriate medium to express this.

She primarily creates her pieces through plaster casting. By challenging the traditional use of plaster casting in industrial ceramics, which typically produces identical forms repeatedly, she creates unique surface textures and forms that are distorted and collapsed. This approach represents a novel challenge to conventional notions of plaster casting. Her ceramics transcend their common industrial uses and aspire to embody the intrinsic qualities of clay.

Therefore, through her use of clay, Liu Kim aims to transform perceptions, encouraging audiences to view the world through new perspectives and seek interpretations.
