THE PERFECT IMPERFECTION N0.3 (DEEP BLUE), 2025

In the society we live in, objects or beings with flaws are often considered worthless and are easily disregarded. However, I actively draw such “flaws” into my artistic practice, proposing a new perspective on elements of imperfection. This work is a reinterpretation of the traditional Korean moon jar. While traditional moon jars are characterized by their immaculate white surface and symmetrical curves, my jars are intentionally broken, cracked, and marked by rough, uneven textures.

The moment an object or concept that exists outside of our conventional perceptions becomes art, we are given the opportunity to view the world through new imaginations and perspectives. In my work, a “flaw” is not merely a defect, but rather an artistic possibility that can generate new value. Even imperfections once deemed meaningless are reborn as artworks through a shift in perspective, and in doing so, they are endowed with new significance.

In contemporary society, things perceived to be flawed or defective are often deemed worthless and rejected. Then, where does the boundary between value and worthlessness lie, and how should we perceive that standard? And what role can art play in this context? My moon jars aim to move beyond binary judgments of value, presenting a starting point for a way of thinking that discovers new possibilities in what is excluded or lies outside of established notions.


우리가 살아가는 사회에는 결점이 있는 대상이나 촌재들은 무가치하게 간주되고 쉽게 외면되곤 한다. 하지만, 나는 이러한 ‘홈’을 오히려 나의 작품세계에 적극적으로 끌어들이며 결함의 요소를 새로운 시각으로 바라볼 것을 제안한다. 본 작품은 한국 전통 달 항아리를 재해석한 것이다. 전통적인 달항아리가 티 없이 맑은 백색과 대칭적 곡선을 지닌다면, 나의 항아리는 의도적으로 깨지고 갈라지며 울퉁불통한 거친 질감을 지닌다.

우리가 가진 관념의 바깥에 존재하는 사물이나 개념이 예술이 되는 순간, 우리는 새로운 상상력과 시각으로 세상을 바라볼 기회를 갖게 된다. 나의 작품에서 홈'은 단순한 결함이 아니라, 새로운 가치를 창조할 수 있는 예술적 가능성으로 자리한댜 무의미하게 여겨졌던 결점조차도 사고의 전환을 통해 예술품으로 재탄생하며, 그 자체로 새로운 가치를 부여받는다.

현대 사회에서는 ‘홈’이나 ‘결함’이 있다고 여겨지는 것들을 무가치하게 여기고 배척된다. 그렇다면 무가치함과 가치의 경계는 어디에 있으며, 우리는 그 기준을 어떻게 바라보아야 할까? 그리고 예술은 이러한 상황에서 어떤 역할을 할 수 있을까? 나의 항아리는 가치 판단의 이분법을 넘어, 배척되거나 관념의 바깥에 존재하는 것들에서 새로운 가능성을 발견하는 사고의 출발점을 제시하고자 한다.
