<Palimpsest_The vase of time>

1983년 한국 완도 해역에서 인양된 한국의 도자 유물들은 오랜 세월 바다 속에 잠겨 있던 흔적을 품고 있었다. 한때 완전했던 항아리와 그릇들은 파도와 모래, 염분의 흐름 속에서 표면이 부식되고 색이 바랬지만, 그 변형된 표면 아래에는 여전히 한국 도자의 고유한 선과 질감, 그리고 유연한 미감이 남아 있었다. 나는 그러한 시간의 흔적 속에서 불완전함이 만들어낸 또 다른 층의 미감을 마주했다.
이 작업은 그러한 유물의 상태를 결손이나 훼손이 아닌, 시간에 의해 재구성된 현재의 층위로 바라보는 시도에서 출발한다. 나는 완전했던 형태를 복원하기보다 부식된 표면과 갈라진 유약, 겹겹이 축적된 물질의 흐름을 통해 도자가 경험한 시간을 다시 읽고자 했다.

이 작품은 기존의 기록이 지워진 자리 위에 다시 쓰인 고문서, 즉 Palimpsest의 개념을 도자라는 언어로 번역한 작업이다. 이 항아리에서 지워짐은 파괴가 아닌 시간의 흔적이며, 그 위에 남은 균열과 퇴적은 과거와 현재가 중첩된 기억의 구조를 이룬다. 나는 이 지점에 주목하여 유물이 과거에 고정된 대상이 아니라, 시간 속에서 지속적으로 의미를 쌓아가는 존재임을 드러내고자 했다.

이 도자기는 그렇게 덧쓰이고 남겨진 흔적들 속에서 다시 피어나는 한국 도자의 미의식에 대한 오마주이자, 시간에 의해 재구성된 유물의 현재형을 탐구하려는 시도이다.




In 1984, Korean ceramic relics salvaged from the waters off Wando, on the southern coast of Korea, carried traces of their long submersion beneath the sea. Once-perfect jars and vessels had their surfaces corroded and colors faded through the flow of waves, sand, and salt, yet within those transformed appearances, the inherent lines, textures, and gentle aesthetics of Korean ceramics still remained alive.
In those traces of time, I encountered another layer of beauty shaped by imperfection.
Rather than restoring their original perfection, I sought to reinterpret the time and changes contained within the relics as a new visual language. The cracks across the surface and the layered flow of materials form, like a palimpsest, a stratum of memories where the past and the present overlap.
This work is an homage to the aesthetic spirit of Korean ceramics that reemerges through traces left and overwritten, and an exploration of the contemporary form of relics reconfigured by time.
